Wayne County School Board holds first meeting after merger of Schools
Last night (Monday) marked the first meeting of the new Wayne County
Board of Education, which now includes members of the former
Monticello Board of Education, following the merge. Eight board
members attended the meeting, where they were learned more about how
the moving efforts are progressing this summer.

Superintendent John Dalton said that everything has gone smoothly so
far and he expressed his appreciation to everyone who has worked hard
to move schools to their new location, which is part of the new grade
configuration at Wayne County. Dalton told board members that
everything is on schedule and school will start on August 7 as planned.

Board member Jerry Lair spoke on behalf of the new board members
during the meeting, expressing his appreciation to Dalton, to the
other board members and to all the people who have helped make the
merge as smooth as possible.

Also during the meeting, the board agreed to raise the drop-out for
students from 16 to 18, following the provisions of Senate Bill 97
that was approved by the state legislature earlier this year.

The board also approved the district's participation in the
Community Eligibility Option Program for food services for the
2013-2014 school year. That means all students in the district will
receive free breakfast and lunch throughout the school year.

The board approved a resolution regarding a bond sale to fund
approximately $446,000 for the purchase of property adjacent to the
campus. The Wayne County School District Finance Corporation, which
consists of board members, approved a resolution to advertise and
sale the bonds on August 1. The corporation also approved refunding
the 2006 bond issue by Monticello School, if interest rates drop to a
level to provide significant savings to the district.
