Monticello City Council Meets
Monticello City Council met in regular session Monday and
unanimously approved a resolution supporting the construction of a
new state-of-the-art public library in downtown Monticello. Mayor
Jeffrey Edwards read the resolution, after explaining that the
library board purchased property near the Wayne County Extension
Office several years ago for the purpose of building a new facility.

The resolution requests that the board include an open dialogue with
the city and the community as it begins the process of constructing a
new library. Edwards noted that in most communities, libraries are
located in the downtown area where they are easily accessible by a
large number of citizens. A downtown location is more friendly to
users, particularly to those who can walk to the facility.
Edwards said the next step will be to draft a letter to the library
board conveying the council's support of keeping the library in
downtown Monticello.

Also during the meeting, the council learned that the city's two
large construction projectsóthe water treatment plant and the
wastewater treatment plantócontinue to move along on schedule. The
water treatment plant could be in operation by early September.

The council approved a USDA Rural Development loan resolution during
Monday's meeting related to the water plant project. The actual
funding had been approved by the council, but the resolution was
needed to complete paperwork for the project.

Also during the meeting, the council approved the reappointment of
Duchess Sloan to the Ethics Board and Kenny Ramsey and Greg Latham to
the Monticello-Wayne County Industrial Development Authority.
