Last year at the beginning of the school year there were 3,235 students in attendance, however, enrollment increased by the end of the 2013-2014 school year to 3,326 students in the district.

Attendance at each facility in the district was as follows on August 6th: Walker Early Learning Center had 242 kindergarten students (preschool students arrive later and are expecting just under 200 youngsters), Bell Elementary had 484 students in grades first-second, Monticello Elementary had 724 students in grades third-four-fifth, Wayne County Middle School had 721 students in grades six-eight, Wayne County High School had 930 students in ninth – twelfth grades, Otter Creek Academy had 38 students, and the Boys Camp had 34 students.

Lots of firsts occurred making it an exciting opening day for students. Among the highlights was the Freshmen Academy kick off held in Pickrell Auditorium at the high school. The freshmen teaching staff welcomed 240 students and spent most of the day providing them with special speakers, introductions to the expectations, and even an entertaining game of Jeopardy in regard to school rules.

The new school district slogan, “Go Cards” was already being used to encourage school spirit across the district. The freshmen class even learned the school song, along with a traditional Cardinal cheer led by the freshmen teachers that echoed into the high school hallways.
