Monticello City Council met Monday and heard the first
reading of an ordinance setting tax rates for 2014-2015. According to
the ordinance, the real property tax rate would be set at 12.4 cents
per hundred dollars of assessed value. That drops from 12.5 cents
The ordinance proposes a tax rate of 12.4 cents per hundred dollars
of assessed value for personal and tangible property. That would
decrease from 13.8 cents from last year. The tax rate for watercraft
and motor vehicles would remain at 22.5 cents per hundred dollars of
Since this was the first reading of the ordinance, no action was
taken by the council. The second reading will be held in September.
During his report to the council, Mayor Jeffrey Edwards said that
plans are being made to meet at the local senior citizens center to
talk with those who use the facility regarding plans for a new
center. Edwards said that officials are hoping to get as much input
as possible in regard to what the new senior citizens center, if
funded, should include.
